Starting from 24st of September
Exhibition “New Home, New Style: Nigerian Fashion, Adaptation and Identity in Estonia” at the People’s Museum of Tallinn

From 24 September, the People’s Museum of Tallinn presents the participatory exhibition “New Home, New Style: Nigerian Clothing Culture, Adaptation and Identity in Estonia.” The exhibition is part of the “Your Museum, Your Exhibition” project.

For many Nigerians living in Estonia, traditional wear is far more than fabric. It tells stories of family, community, celebration, heritage and home. Every wrapper, bead, cap, headpiece, hairstyle and ceremonial garment reflects traditions passed down through generations.

The exhibition explores how Nigerian cultural clothes are preserved, adapted and reimagined in a new environment. It shows how we wear traditional attire alongside winter coats, how our ceremonial clothing finds its place at weddings, workplaces and community celebrations, and how cultural identity is expressed while embracing life in Estonia.

The exhibition is curated by Uwanma Odefa, a member of Tallinn’s Nigerian community.

The exhibition will be on view until 24 January 2027.
