New exhibition “2 Perspectives on Kalamaja: A Dialogue Between Watercolour and FilmUus näitus”

A new exhibition opens in the Kalamaja Museum gallery on October 23, centering on watercolors of Kalamaja’s historic district by local artist Aleks Kase. These are complemented by photographs taken by amateur photographer Taivo Hiie at the very same locations Kask painted. The photographs were shot using film stock from 1949, 1986, and 1991; notably, a significant portion of Kase’s own works that also date back to the 1990s. Juxtaposing the photographs and paintings allows viewers to see present-day Kalamaja through the lens of a different era, creating a symbolic bridge between the past and the present.

Coinciding with the exhibition’s opening is the release of the art book “Kalamaja vaated. Aleks Kase akvarellid” (Views of Kalamaja: The Watercolors of Aleks Kase), which offers a deeper insight into Kase’s biography and his journey in the art world.
