On a Book about Garden and Park Design from the Library of Tallinn Merchant Martin Heinrich Gebauer and Related Themes\u201d by the Tallinn City Museum is now open at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ra.ee\/rahvusarhiiv-2\/noora\/\">National Archives\u2019 Noora building<\/a> in Tartu.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"795\">In the late 18th century, in 1797, a wealthy merchant named <strong>Martin Heinrich Gebauer<\/strong> passed away in Tallinn. Among the possessions he left behind was a remarkably extensive library for his time. A detailed inventory of this collection, compiled after his death, is also displayed as part of the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"1208\">The inventory includes a note referencing <strong><em data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"887\">\u201cHirschfelds Winter und de\u03b2elben Garten-Kunst\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, which is believed to refer to <strong><em data-start=\"919\" data-end=\"946\">\u201cTheorie der Gartenkunst\u201d<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Christian Cay Lorenz Hirschfeld<\/strong> (1742\u20131792). This five-volume treatise, published between 1779 and 1785, was preceded by a shorter, single-volume edition in 1775. The exhibition explores the question of why a merchant in Tallinn would have owned such a work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1583\">On display are original volumes of Hirschfeld\u2019s seminal work, as well as a garden business catalogue from late 18th-century Tallinn.
