Hand-coloured photograph from the series How to Be a Twig, 1990s.

The work of Einar Tiits (1963–2016) stands among the most significant recent discoveries in Estonian photographic art. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Tiits used handmade colour filters, gouache, and ink pens to create a vividly grotesque style that transformed photography into a vibrant circus. With methods innovative for his time, he boldly reimagined the human body, often placing himself before the camera as a fragile and vulnerable, yet self-ironically defiant model. He also emerges as a lyricist of nature, whose desire to experience the world from a plant’s perspective feels strikingly contemporary in the context of today’s eco-philosophical thinking.

Curator: Annika Haas.

Open: 6 June – 1 August 2026 at 2–8 PM.

The work of Einar Tiits (1963–2016) stands among the most significant recent discoveries in Estonian photographic art.
